Background of the Study
Nigeria’s entertainment industry, particularly Nollywood, is a global phenomenon contributing significantly to the country’s GDP and cultural influence. However, governance challenges such as weak regulatory frameworks, corruption, and lack of transparency continue to hinder its growth and global competitiveness (Okoro & Eze, 2023). Governance structures are critical for ensuring accountability, fairness, and sustainable development in this dynamic sector.
The Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), headquartered in Jos, Plateau State, is tasked with developing the film industry and promoting Nigerian culture. Despite its mandate, the NFC has faced criticism for inefficiencies, mismanagement, and lack of strategic direction (Bello & Ayo, 2024). These challenges undermine the corporation’s ability to support the entertainment industry effectively.
This study explores governance challenges within the NFC, aiming to identify systemic issues and propose strategies for improved performance and industry development.
Statement of the Problem
Governance challenges in Nigeria’s entertainment industry have stifled innovation, investment, and global competitiveness. The NFC, despite its strategic role, struggles with issues such as lack of accountability, inadequate funding, and bureaucratic inefficiencies (Adeyemi & Musa, 2024). These problems not only limit the corporation’s effectiveness but also hinder the growth of the broader entertainment sector.
Without addressing these governance challenges, the NFC risks losing its relevance, and Nigeria’s entertainment industry may fail to achieve its full potential. This study seeks to investigate these issues and provide actionable recommendations for reform.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the governance challenges faced by the Nigerian Film Corporation.
To evaluate the impact of governance challenges on the performance of the NFC.
To propose strategies for improving governance and accountability in the NFC.
